Who is St. Anne?

St. Anne — whose name comes from the Hebrew Hannah, meaning 'grace' or 'favour' — is venerated across Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican traditions as the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus Christ himself.

Though not named in the canonical Gospels, her story is preserved in the Protoevangelium of James, an early Christian text from around the 2nd century. Together with her husband St. Joachim, she is remembered as a woman of deep faith, steadfast prayer, and unwavering trust in God.

For many years, Anne and Joachim remained childless — a profound sorrow in their world. Yet they did not abandon their faith. Through persistent prayer and trust in Divine Providence, their longing was answered with the miraculous birth of Mary — the daughter who would become the Mother of our Saviour.

Her LegacyIntercession & Patronage

Mother, Grandmother, Intercessor

St. Anne raised Mary with love, wisdom, and a profound reverence for God — forming the heart that would one day say a courageous 'Yes' to the Annunciation. In this way, her faithful motherhood became quietly woven into the very fabric of our salvation.

She is honoured as the patron saint of mothers, grandmothers, and those who long for children; of homemakers, seamstresses, and miners; and of the Breton people and of Canada. Her intercession is especially sought by women, by those who carry the sorrow of infertility or loss, and by all who seek the grace of patient, persevering faith.

Devotion to St. Anne spread quickly through the early Church and flourished through the medieval period. Shrines and pilgrimages in her honour drew the faithful from across Europe, and her feast on July 26th continues to be celebrated with deep joy and devotion throughout the Catholic world.

Our FeastJuly 26th

St. Anne Day in Olaulim

The Annual Feast of St. Anne — celebrated on July 26th, shared with her husband St. Joachim — is the great celebration of parish life in Olaulim. It is a time of solemn liturgy, vibrant procession, and joyful community, drawing parishioners, former residents, and pilgrims together in honour of our patron.

The feast is more than a celebration; it is a renewal of identity. To gather on St. Anne Day in Olaulim is to affirm who we are — a community born of faith, shaped by grace, and united under the patronage of the grandmother of Jesus Christ.

We invite all who carry St. Anne Church in their hearts — wherever in the world they may be — to join us in prayer and celebration every July 26th. Her intercession has carried this community for centuries, and we trust it will continue to do so for generations to come.

Devotion

A Prayer to St. Anne

Good St. Anne, you were especially filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit,

and God granted you the singular privilege of being the mother of Mary,

the most perfect of all creatures after Jesus.

Through your powerful intercession, obtain for us the grace

to faithfully follow your example, to practise all the virtues,

and to serve God with a pure and loving heart.

Pray for us, St. Anne — that we may walk in faith,

live in hope, and grow ever deeper in love,

now and in all the days to come.

Amen.
